Discovering my son's new Christmas wish list... after I'm done shopping

by Traci Schumacher on Thu, 12/19/2013 - 10:38pm

This week I essentially finished my Christmas shopping for my children (yay!). After observing their preferences, asking their input, and generally looking for cool toys for them, I was feeling pretty good about my selections.

So this morning my son saw a commercial on tv for these little Lego type toys that change into robots or something. He was pretty excited about them. He dashed off to his room to write them on his “Christmas wish list.”

Out of the mouths of babes: how my 4-year-old amused me at Walmart

by Traci Schumacher on Thu, 06/27/2013 - 10:18am

I was shopping at Walmart with my 4-year-old the other day while my older kids were at a summer camp. My husband is often kind enough to do our Walmart shopping so I can avoid the challenge of shopping with all three kids in tow. But, if I get the chance, I will go there with just my youngest child, and the experience is far more manageable. So there we were.

Adding it up: the receipt doesn't lie

by Traci Schumacher on Fri, 01/11/2013 - 1:46pm

It's amazing how quickly it adds up. I go into Walmart with a short list of items ranging from peanut butter to a picture frame. Shouldn't take long. Shouldn't cost much. Though I was pretty sure my $40 in cash wouldn't cover it. It never does.

The (not so) great swimsuit search

by Traci Schumacher on Mon, 04/30/2012 - 1:51pm

Today I am searching for a new swimsuit. The weather is heating up, pools are preparing to open, and my kids have already started talking about swimming. The inevitable is fast approaching, and I would be wise to be ready. I will soon need to wear a swimsuit.

Bargain-hunting for children's clothing is not without its challenges

by Traci Schumacher on Fri, 04/20/2012 - 3:07pm

I love a good bargain, especially when it comes to buying my children's clothing. Kids grow so fast that I cringe at the thought of paying full retail prices. Hand-me-downs, outlets,, and used clothing stores are my friends.

No clear or mesh book bags at this Walmart!

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 08/09/2011 - 2:50pm

I ventured forth yesterday in search of school supplies, hoping to achieve a one-stop-shopping experience. I went to the Walmart by the Savannah Mall.

After gathering most of our supplies, I started looking for book bags, but could not find any clear or mesh ones (as required by Chatham County public schools). So I asked an employee about it, and she informed me that this particular store was not authorized to carry the clear/mesh bags.

Confession of a compulsive couponer

by Arlinda Smith Broady on Fri, 01/29/2010 - 12:16pm

The day my column ran about using coupons more effectively to save money, I broke my own cardinal rule -- I went to the grocery store without a list or a single coupon.

I'd wanted to fix dinner before I went to work because I knew I'd be late and my kids deserved more than Hot Pockets and canned corn. (Dad's idea of gourmet cooking.)

While struggling through the last five minutes on the elliptical machine, I settled on baked rigatoni. All I needed was some ground meat, tomato paste and cheese.
