Misadventures in fish-sitting

by Traci Schumacher on Wed, 11/28/2012 - 10:34am

A couple weeks ago, my daughter's teacher asked her class if anyone could take home the class fish and care for them during the Thanksgiving break. My daughter begged me to volunteer and, because I do not want fish of our own, I agreed, hoping this would be an easy way to appease her fish desires for a while.

Another one bites the dust (or 3-year-old deals with the death of his hermit crab)

by Traci Schumacher on Mon, 09/24/2012 - 8:36am

My 3-year-old's hermit crab died Saturday night, and I had to break the news to him yesterday. I was a little nervous about how he would take it. He loved his little crabbie. And my daughter had a hermit crab die a while back and was nearly devastated by it, so I was not looking forward to this discussion.

Having a dog in the family is almost like having another child. Sure, you can leave them alone for extended periods of time and they don't have much of a social life, but they do require considerable time, effort, and financial support. In our family, we have three human children and two canines.

Tiny, the “tired” hermit crab, was more than not active. She actually had not come out of her shell at all since we got her, and then I realized I hadn't seen her move at the store either. Here's a helpful hint: always buy a hermit crab that is actively walking around. After a couple months of talking about it, my husband and I finally took our kids to get pet hermit crabs on Saturday. We went to Earthbound Trading Company in the Oglethorpe Mall where they have a variety of hermit crabs in cute painted shells. The girl who assisted us was very knowledgeable and helpful.
