Gross discovery at my backyard bird feeder

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 10/01/2013 - 10:38am

Recently I noticed some strange-looking squirrels at the bird feeder in our backyard. One squirrel had a couple patches of missing fur so I thought maybe he had been in a fight or an accident. After I saw the other squirrel I realized that was not the case.

The second squirrel was covered in fur-less lumps that seemed to have a small hole in the center of them. I wondered if it was cancer or some other dreadful disease. And was it a risk to my dogs and kids who love to roam around the backyard?

The value of the children's backyard project

“Go outside and play” has been a favorite suggestion of parents for ages. Kids get out in the fresh air, they burn off some energy, and parents get some peace. I love it that we have a fenced yard so I can know where my kids are, checking on them periodically through the windows. They can run around and act crazy, and I don't have to hear it all.
