Gross discovery at my backyard bird feeder

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 10/01/2013 - 10:38am

Recently I noticed some strange-looking squirrels at the bird feeder in our backyard. One squirrel had a couple patches of missing fur so I thought maybe he had been in a fight or an accident. After I saw the other squirrel I realized that was not the case.

The second squirrel was covered in fur-less lumps that seemed to have a small hole in the center of them. I wondered if it was cancer or some other dreadful disease. And was it a risk to my dogs and kids who love to roam around the backyard?

When the path to school is lined with cicadas and worms

This school year I've been making a point of walking my kids to school in the morning. It starts our day out with a little exercise and fresh air, and gives us some nice time together. Plus, I've read a couple of articles about how physical activity, and especially walking to school in the morning, really sets kids up for success throughout their school day, making them more alert and better able to learn.

The mysterious Savannah lobster

Recently our family was enjoying a beautiful, sunny day by hiking on the nature trail behind the Skidaway Island Aquarium. We stopped for a time to explore a marshy area where the kids tried to catch fiddler crabs and look at shells. My 7-year-old son was especially happy to catch the little crabs, admire them, and send them on their way.
