Discussing screen time with my preschooler

by Traci Schumacher on Mon, 04/29/2013 - 12:50pm

Like many moms, I set limits for the amount of screen time my kids can have each day. My current standard is 30 minutes of computer or video game time per school day, with a bit more allowed on weekends.

Limiting freedom of speech

Driving in the van the other day, my 8-year-old daughter said something to her brother with a very negative, mean-spirited attitude. When I corrected her, she replied, “Mom, this is America. I can say whatever I want.” Oh my!

My first thought was, hey she's learned something about freedom of speech! But my response to her was, “In this family, we speak kindly or we say nothing.”

The color orange and the need for control

by Traci Schumacher on Thu, 02/16/2012 - 2:20pm

Does your little one have a favorite color? My 2-year-old loves orange. If there is a choice of colors, he'll pick orange. Orange shirts, orange socks, orange crayons, orange candy... It strikes me as funny because my two older kids did not have such a strong color preference. Ever.

So I was reading an article online the other day (maybe at Babycenter.com?) about preschoolers having favorite colors and particular ways they must do things. (My son is very particular in so many ways!) It was very interesting.
