Being a Grace Mommy: A Christian perspective

by Traci Schumacher on Fri, 10/11/2013 - 10:03am

As a parent sometimes I regret having to seem so bossy to my kids. “Do this.” "Don't do that.” “No, no, no...” I don't want to be Mean Mommy, but sometimes I have to come across that way in order to be Good Mommy, doing what's best for my children in the long run.

This got me thinking about how God deals with us, His children. There is both Law and Gospel. The Law is all the rules and requirements. The Do's and Don't's and Should's and Shouldn't's. Mean Mommy is all about the Law.

The whimsical rules of a 4-year-old

by Traci Schumacher on Fri, 10/04/2013 - 11:08am

There is nothing quite like the self-imposed rules of 4-year-olds. They can create their own terms of How Things Should Be for so many different situations, it's impossible to keep up.

Our 4-year-old really excels at this game of rule making. For example, every night before bed he just has to have a spoonful of honey because one time he was coughing before bed, and I gave him honey to soothe the cough. So now he must have honey, which is fine with me since honey is a healthy food.

The color orange and the need for control

by Traci Schumacher on Thu, 02/16/2012 - 2:20pm

Does your little one have a favorite color? My 2-year-old loves orange. If there is a choice of colors, he'll pick orange. Orange shirts, orange socks, orange crayons, orange candy... It strikes me as funny because my two older kids did not have such a strong color preference. Ever.

So I was reading an article online the other day (maybe at Babycenter.com?) about preschoolers having favorite colors and particular ways they must do things. (My son is very particular in so many ways!) It was very interesting.
