"Brainstorming" on a school project with my 4-year-old

by Traci Schumacher on Fri, 11/15/2013 - 10:22am

This week my 4-year-old brought home an assignment from school to disguise a turkey. On a sheet of thick, white paper was Tom the Turkey, and it was up to the kids to disguise him so the Farmer would not find him for Thanksgiving. The instructions said for parents to “brainstorm” with the child about ways to disguise old Tom. “Be creative,” they said. And, “Use a variety of materials.”

Son gets a little too creative with his homework

The kids were working on their homework recently when my 7-year-old son disappeared down the hall. A couple minutes later he returned to the living room, and plopped himself on the couch with his papers. That's when he proudly announced, “No point in doing it the old-fashioned way!”

I was in the kitchen, but I just had to see what he was up to. I couldn't imagine what my son might consider “old-fashioned” or what that had to do with his homework.

Happy about homework

This week when I looked in my preschooler's folder from school, there was a simple worksheet in it. I pulled it out and saw that it said “homework” at the top. It was my son's very first homework assignment.

I said, “Look, you have homework today.”

My son's eyes lit up. He took the paper, held it up, and exclaimed, “I finally have homework!”

We've had some schoolwork issues this year in our home, and it's made me think about different ways to handle schoolwork and other responsibilities of our children. For concerned parents, it seems to me there are two methods with two very different mindsets. Let me know if you can think of some other ways.

Teaching time management to my 7-year-old

I am realizing that I need to work on time management skills with my 7-year-old daughter. The problem is not that she has too much homework, but that she is such a perfectionist about it that it takes her forever!

Being creative can ease the homework struggles

Do you struggle to get your kids to do their homework? I have not had much trouble with it until this year. Previously, we would come home, change clothes, have a snack, and do homework. My son would get home at 1:30, and my daughter would get home at 3:30.
