I have a love hate relationship with screens. Screens... you know, the kind kids love to stare at for hours on end, playing video games or watching tv shows and movies?

I love for my children to have fun, and I happily acknowledge that they can have fun and learn certain skills and knowledge from video games. And I love movies and shows that are funny, inspirational, thought-provoking. There can be a lot of value on a screen.

Like many moms, I set limits for the amount of screen time my kids can have each day. My current standard is 30 minutes of computer or video game time per school day, with a bit more allowed on weekends.

As a parent, I try to treat my kids as fairly as possible. I want them all to know they are loved without condition, and to have the same kinds of opportunities in life. I try to keep the family rules consistent and evenly enforced. But sometimes I realize my youngest is doing things my oldest was not allowed to do at that age. And I wonder why.

Superlative Boy in the Age of the Internet

My 6-year-old son is all about superlatives. He wants to know the biggest and smallest and fastest everything. He has also, at his young age, realized that the internet is a great source of information. Therefore, in his view, my husband and I have no excuse for not finding the answers we do not know.

Family time around the computer

The times, they are a-changin'. For example, what are some of your fond memories with your parents from your childhood? Family cook-outs, weekend camping trips, going to drive-in movies? Okay, I'm dating myself here. Nevertheless, none of my childhood memories involve a computer – unless playing Atari counts!
