by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 08/06/2013 - 8:35pm

Almost school time again... remembering to make the most of every season

by Traci Schumacher on Wed, 07/31/2013 - 10:50am

Soon the school bells will be ringing and the children will be filling their classrooms. Many kids are dreading this return to the school year routine. My son said just the other day that he wishes he didn't have to go to school.

Looking back on my own childhood, I remember the feeling of dread just before the start of a new school year. It's that uncertainty of how things will play out. It's also simply the disruption of the comfortable summer life with hardly a care in the world. Change can be challenging after all.

How people with kids benefit from having a dog in the family

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 07/30/2013 - 9:11am

In our family, we have three kids and two dogs. My husband and I like to joke that having dogs is almost like having two more kids. While that may be true in some respects, there are other ways that having a dog around makes it easier to have kids around.

by Traci Schumacher on Mon, 07/22/2013 - 8:34pm

Today I made a concerted effort to arrange a fun and active day for my kids. I adhere to the mindset that kids should not need to be entertained constantly. That they should be allowed ample free time to use their imaginations to find ways to amuse themselves. My husband worries that our kids might often be too bored.

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 07/16/2013 - 9:08pm

What would you think if I told you that you can enhance your child's development and self-control by taking away their toys and cutting out their scheduled activities? Well, sort of...

I read a fascinating article today about the importance of unsupervised, improvised play for kids. It is based on the research of Howard Chudacoff, a cultural historian at Brown University.

Traveling to new places with kids is an amazing adventure. It shakes you out of your comfort zone, stretches you in new ways, and shows you what you're made of. It is a great learning experience for the whole family. I highly recommend it.

To my digital camera: thanks for helping me take way too many awesome pictures of my kids

by Traci Schumacher on Wed, 07/03/2013 - 7:28pm

My kids love looking at our family photo albums from time to time. And I marvel at what a difference digital cameras have made in terms of capturing the memories of childhood.

I have tons of photos of my three kids... from the days they were born to their first steps to their first days of school. Special pictures from vacations and birthdays and simply silly everyday shots. My kids' lives are extremely well-documented, and I hope they appreciate that when they are older.

Out of the mouths of babes: how my 4-year-old amused me at Walmart

by Traci Schumacher on Thu, 06/27/2013 - 9:18am

I was shopping at Walmart with my 4-year-old the other day while my older kids were at a summer camp. My husband is often kind enough to do our Walmart shopping so I can avoid the challenge of shopping with all three kids in tow. But, if I get the chance, I will go there with just my youngest child, and the experience is far more manageable. So there we were.
