Reconciling myself to the ebb and flow of clutter

by Traci Schumacher on Thu, 09/26/2013 - 11:06am

I suppose every home has a collecting spot. Or at least I like to think that it's not just mine. In our home, the collecting spot is the love seat in the living room. It's the primary place where things gather temporarily. Mail and other assorted papers, shopping bags, laundry to fold, random toys, etc. They are not meant to stay there, but they wait patiently for their next destination.

How do you battle the accumulation of kid clutter in your home?

by Traci Schumacher on Fri, 04/19/2013 - 10:53am

How do you handle all of your kid's toys and trinkets? My children tend to be on the pack rat end of the spectrum. They love their stuff. When asked if we can get rid of something, they immediately protest. They will cite the importance of that particular piece of plastic based on its connection to their preschool teacher, for example.

So I have a dilemma. As more stuff comes into our home, other stuff must move out. Do I make the kids decide what to pass on to others or do I decide while they are not home?

Do you save good articles for future reference?

Do you ever tear out a good article from a magazine, saving it for future reference? I do it all the time. There are so many interesting and helpful ideas out there on everything from handling sibling rivalry to organizing your home to getting in better shape.

Rrriiipp! There's one on cute crafts to make with the kids. Rrriiipp! There's another on teaching your kids to be generous.

Could Fall Cleaning be addictive?

Maybe I've gotten my seasons mixed up, but I'm on a mission lately to clean out the house. A spring cleaning of sorts. Only in the fall.It all started last month when we had our yard sale. We got rid of a bunch of stuff, made some money, and freed up some space. I noticed myself feeling lighter somehow.Gradually since then I have been hauling the leftovers off to Goodwill. More space in the garage. More spring in my step.Today I took a bunch of shoes to donate, and rounded up a bazillion plastic bags to take for recycling.
