This summer my kids participated in Live Oak Library's reading program, and again I found it to be a great way to encourage my young readers. There is a lot of emphasis in parenting circles on developing our children's reading skills, which is good. I am surprised, however, at the lack of emphasis on nurturing a love for math and numbers.

The value of the children's backyard project

“Go outside and play” has been a favorite suggestion of parents for ages. Kids get out in the fresh air, they burn off some energy, and parents get some peace. I love it that we have a fenced yard so I can know where my kids are, checking on them periodically through the windows. They can run around and act crazy, and I don't have to hear it all.

Early school registration encouraged in Effingham County

SPRINGFIELD - New residents to Effingham County are encouraged to
register their children for enrollment in the Effingham County public
school system as early as possible before Aug. 9, which is the first
day of the 2010-2011 school term.

Those who choose to register the last week before school starts may experience an extremely long wait.
