A look at Saint Patrick

by Traci S on Tue, 03/12/2013 - 4:04pm

With the coming of St. Patrick's Day and all the hoopla that surrounds it in Savannah, I think it's good to take a moment to consider the origins of this most festive holiday. I like to explain to my kids the meanings behind events when I can, and St. Patrick's Day is a great opportunity for some basic investigation.

On Saturday our family made our traditional two-hour drive to Charleston to experience the James Island Holiday Festival of Lights (http://www.ccprc.com/index.aspx?NID=1546). It's a three-mile drive through Christmas light displays along with Santa's Village, which boasts a train ride, marshmallows for toasting, a holiday sand sculpture, Santa, carousel, and more.

Thanksgiving Thoughts

by Traci S on Fri, 11/26/2010 - 10:46am

We gave thanks yesterday with lunch at my parents' house and dinner with my husband's family. My 4-year-old chose Thanksgiving to stop eating meat for some reason, and my toddler decided the rolls and pumpkin pie were the only items worthy of his palate. My daughter enjoyed the meals, although she declared the sweet potatoes “too sweet.” Go figure. Who knew something as traditional and delicious as Thanksgiving could cause so much dissent among the little ones? I'm wondering at what age they will fully embrace this holiday.
