When a bug bite goes beyond itchy to become a problem

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 09/24/2013 - 12:02pm

Living in South Georgia, we deal with a lot of bugs, from biting mosquitoes and sand gnats to benign yet annoying love bugs. In our family, my 7-year-old son and my husband are the biting bug magnets. We can all be outside together, and the two of them will end up with multiple bites while the rest of us may have just one or two. (They both have O+ blood type, which I read is one factor that attracts mosquitoes.)

On the mommy radar: flesh-eating bacteria

by Traci Schumacher on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 9:20pm

Are the stories of the flesh-eating bacteria freaking you out at all? I realize these sorts of things happen every year (500 to 1000 cases per year – which, frankly, seems a bit too high for my comfort level). But now, every day there's an update on these two poor women with the flesh-eating bacteria, and I find it rather unsettling.

VIDEO: Exercise and pregnancy

VIDEO: Exercise and pregnancy

by Coastal Mommies... on Tue, 12/28/2010 - 9:57am

Even though pregnant women may not be able to see them, they're still there! We're talking about the legs. And we can't neglect them during the nine months of pregnancy.

Squats and plies with the stability ball are not only a great way to challenge those quadriceps muscles, but these exercises also open the pelvic outlet to prepare for labor.

Caution: Safety first. Women should always get medical clearance from their doctors before beginning or continuing any workout program during pregnancy.

No Fluoride for Babies, dentists caution

by nyscof on Mon, 05/17/2010 - 7:40am

The California Dental Association (CDA) joins a growing list
of researchers, dental and health organizations advising against regularly
mixing infant formula with fluoridated water to avoid discoloring babies'
developing teeth (fluorosis). But little effort is made to inform the public.

Neither a nutrient nor required for healthy teeth, fluoride
chemicals are added to many public water supplies and some bottled water in a
failed attempt to reduce tooth decay.

Hot 'n Healthy: Busy parents can do cardio with their children

Hot 'n Healthy: Busy parents can do cardio with their children

by Coastal Mommies... on Tue, 11/24/2009 - 9:10am

Whether you work or stay home with children, time is always an issue. If you can't seem to find time to work out, why not combine your workout with spending time with your children?

There are many parks and recreational areas to jog while pushing a stroller or letting your toddler ride his bike or scooter beside you.
