"Brainstorming" on a school project with my 4-year-old

This week my 4-year-old brought home an assignment from school to disguise a turkey. On a sheet of thick, white paper was Tom the Turkey, and it was up to the kids to disguise him so the Farmer would not find him for Thanksgiving. The instructions said for parents to “brainstorm” with the child about ways to disguise old Tom. “Be creative,” they said. And, “Use a variety of materials.”

Celebrating a small victory for our picky eater

The big news last night when my husband got home from work was that our 3-year-old had eaten mashed potatoes at dinner. I realize that doesn't sound too impressive to most parents. What kid doesn't eat mashed potatoes? What's not to like about mashed potatoes?

Overheard: my 5-year-old's wedding is called off

I was watching my friend's 5-year-old daughter, a favorite friend of my 5-year-old son, when I overheard their conversation. Previously the two playmates had decided they would marry each other when they grow up. How cute! Well, today things took a different turn.

My son was talking about how they were going to get married, when his friend casually informed him that she would be marrying another boy from her class. “I told Silas I was gonna marry him,” she said matter-of-factly. My son fell silent.
