by Coastal Mommies... on Wed, 05/26/2010 - 5:55am

SPRINGFIELD - New residents to Effingham County are encouraged to
register their children for enrollment in the Effingham County public
school system as early as possible before Aug. 9, which is the first
day of the 2010-2011 school term.

Those who choose to register the last week before school starts may experience an extremely long wait.

ShelterBox representatives were in Effingham County this week setting up one of the organization's disaster-relief tents for
students to see.

Effingham County schools students raised nearly
$26,000 for victims of the Haiti earthquake. The money was given to
Rotary Club International to be used by ShelterBox for the tents.

Each tent, along with the supplies that come with it, costs about $1,000 and sleeps up to 10 people.

End of Summer Dirge

by Heather M Flood on Sun, 08/16/2009 - 12:40pm

I want to know how this happened. Again.

Summer always dawns with the promise of hope. Hope for lazy pool days. Hope for sleeping in late. Hope for slowing down and doing nothing. Hope of catching up on long overdue projects. Hope of learning a new hobby. I could go on all day with my list of summer expectations.

When summer begins the possibilities seem endless. Whoever coined the term 'endless days of summer' obviously meant it sarcastically because summer days are not endless. In fact I have 3 summer days left.

As the first day of the 2009-2010 school year rapidly approaches, most of us are searching for creative strategies to motivate and guide our children toward success in the 9 months ahead. Working with children, teens, and their parents over the past several years as a pediatric nurse practitioner, I have discovered quite a few strategies that you may find helpful as your child prepares for the upcoming school year.

The one where Dizzy's son starts middle school and she suffers an emotional breakdown...

Today is Open House at my son's school and the realization that he is starting middle school this year hit me like a ton of bricks last night when I went to bed. It took about one minute for the tears to start when I realized that my little boy wasn't so little anymore. He wasn't this cute little sweet little man...the little boy who plays with Transformers toys and laughs hysterically at the mention of "butts". He's 11 years old now and out of elementary school and a whole new world begins for him in three days.

It is almost that time again! Yes, the 2009-2010 school year is just around the corner. For those of us in Richmond Hill it begins on August 7th. Here are some friendly reminders:
