Springtime hiking at Fort McAllister

by Traci Schumacher on Mon, 03/10/2014 - 9:58am

Spring came to visit yesterday with her sparkling sunshine and warm breezes. In celebration, our family hit the trails at Fort McAllister State Park near Richmond Hill. My husband and I guided our merry band of children and dogs as they happily bounded down the trail. Even our 4-year-old, who sometimes mysteriously “can't walk,” zipped along pretending he was riding an electric bobcat (yeah, I don't know).

Skatefest 2013: Time to hit the ice!

by Traci Schumacher on Wed, 12/18/2013 - 11:17am

Our family traded our shoes for ice skates Monday night at Skatefest 2013. Well, four of us did. My husband opted to observe, socialize, and take pictures to document our fun. I happily escorted the kids around the rink for an hour and a half. Everyone made great progress in their ice skating skills over the course of the evening, though it's interesting to see how their experiences were shaped by their personalities.

Free tools teach kids computer programming during Hour of Code Week

by Traci Schumacher on Fri, 12/13/2013 - 10:04am

This week is Hour of Code Week, in case you didn't know. A project of Code.org, with the support of CEOs, celebrities, and the President, the goal is to encourage every student (all ages) to take some time to start learning computer programming.

Going through Advent to get to Christmas, and revamping our Advent calendar along the way

by Traci Schumacher on Wed, 12/04/2013 - 9:25pm

Counting down the days until Christmas, I have set up our Advent calendar. A gift to us from family, our beautiful wooden box is decorated with a winter animal scene, and its little drawers are numbered for the days before Christmas.

In the past I have hidden little candies or tiny toys in the drawers, but that became more challenging as our family grew. When our third child came along the drawers became far too small, so instead I tucked little notes inside that sent the kids on scavenger hunts around the house for small prizes.

Day Trip: Walk like an Egyptian at the SC State Museum

by Traci Schumacher on Mon, 11/25/2013 - 12:50pm

Imagine intricately carved statues, elaborate stone jewelry, a golden throne covered with ancient scenes, cobras, falcons, and one mummy. On Saturday our family stepped back in time among such objects to explore the tomb of King Tutankhamun, aka Tut, by way of replicas on display at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia. Our two and a half hour drive was rewarded by the excitement and amazement of our children as they wondered at the treasures of the boy king.

Our family adventure camping out with the Cub Scouts

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 10/29/2013 - 9:34am

This weekend our family attended the annual Cub Scout Haunted Trail Camp Out. Beginning Saturday morning and lasting through Sunday afternoon, it was a fun time. The kids chose from a variety of activities such as softball, volleyball, art, chess, hiking, and geology. In the evening there was a Haunted Trail and carnival games. It was truly a good time for the whole family.

Hunter Cattle Company's Farm Heritage Day was great family fun

by Traci Schumacher on Sun, 09/22/2013 - 8:17pm

On Saturday our family went to the Hunter Cattle Company's Farm Heritage Day near Brooklet, and we had a grand time. Following a relaxing 40-minute drive through beautiful Georgia farm land, we arrived at the farm. The kids enjoyed riding horses and ponies, watching a goat milking demonstration, riding the mini train ride, chasing chickens, touring the farm by wagon, and simply playing.

What my kids planned for Labor Day

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 09/03/2013 - 4:18pm

Well, we had a nice Labor Day weekend... a little beach, a little pool, a little shopping. Pretty much something for everyone.

This year my kids made the connection that "labor" means "work," so they decided Labor Day should be a work day around the house. This realization occurred on Sunday, so that evening they began cleaning up. How cool is that?!

The fun day that didn't happen, according to my son

by Traci Schumacher on Mon, 07/22/2013 - 8:34pm

Today I made a concerted effort to arrange a fun and active day for my kids. I adhere to the mindset that kids should not need to be entertained constantly. That they should be allowed ample free time to use their imaginations to find ways to amuse themselves. My husband worries that our kids might often be too bored.

How to clear out some toys, free up your schedule, and enrich your kids all at the same time

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 07/16/2013 - 9:08pm

What would you think if I told you that you can enhance your child's development and self-control by taking away their toys and cutting out their scheduled activities? Well, sort of...

I read a fascinating article today about the importance of unsupervised, improvised play for kids. It is based on the research of Howard Chudacoff, a cultural historian at Brown University.
