When the mail brought the world into our home

by Traci Schumacher on Wed, 11/13/2013 - 9:28pm

The daily mail recently brought us photos of six children living in poverty in nations like Indonesia, Ethiopia, and Mexico. Three girls and three boys posing for their pictures in hopes of finding sponsors to help them in their lives.

The letter accompanying the photos was from Compassion International, a Christian group that focuses on helping the poorest children of the world. They asked for a special donation to help the kids on the waiting list.

Our Oatland Island birthday party was fun, educational, and charitable

by Traci Schumacher on Tue, 02/21/2012 - 2:35pm

We had a birthday extravaganza weekend in our family, celebrating my daughter's 8th and my son's upcoming 6th birthdays. After agonizing over what to do for their birthdays, in just a couple of weeks I planned a birthday party at Oatland Island Wildlife Center for the two of them and about 10 of their closest friends.

Christmas charity: a team sport

by Traci Schumacher on Wed, 12/07/2011 - 2:42pm

They come in the mail. They come in the children's school folders. They come to my email address.

They come when I'm out shopping. They are requests for donations of any sort to help the needy at this special time of year. They are heartbreaking. They are simply too many.

Of course, Christmas is about giving and sharing love and especially helping others in response to the Good News. I'm all for it. I've given joyfully, buying toys and sending money to needy strangers, praying they will be blessed.

Old Cell Phone?

by The Coastal Mommie on Thu, 05/28/2009 - 9:15am

I was reading the online version of the paper this morning and thought this was something you would like to know about.

Cell Phones for Soldiers and the Holiday Inn Midtown are calling on all Americans to support the more than 150,000 troops serving overseas by donating unused cell phones.

Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect more than 50,000 cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families.

Metro Savannah residents can support the collection drive by donating their phones at the Holiday Inn, 7100 Abercorn St.
