Mom's choice for preschooler's shoes... anything but shoelaces, please

by Traci S on Fri, 03/22/2013 - 8:43am

Here's a free tip: don't buy shoes that tie until your child is ready to learn to tie them. Sure, they look cute on the 3-year-old, but by the time you have tied his shoelaces for the tenth time that day – and it's not even dinner time – you will know what I'm talking about.

My 3-year-old has a cute pair of sneakers that tie. They were his brother's shoes when he was that age, but his brother preferred the Velcro shoes he could quickly put on by himself. My youngest child, however, loves these shoes with their big kid laces.

What goes on inside their heads?

Do you ever find yourself marveling at the workings of your child's mind? I have three kids, and I still get surprised by some of the things they come up with. It can range from the good “Wow, what a neat idea!” to the intermediate “Isn't that interesting?” to the puzzled “Where in the world did that come from?” to the less-than-pleased “What were you thinking?”

I think kids like to keep us adults on our toes. Just when we think we've got them figured out, they throw us a curve ball.

The pros and cons of finding a great babysitter

by Traci S on Fri, 03/15/2013 - 9:49am

It had been a long, long time since my husband and I had hired a babysitter. We usually manage to swap sitting services with other parents or leave the kids with Grandma and Grandpa when we need to go out on our own. We didn't even know anyone else we could ask to watch the kids for us.

Everyday Wellness: Living the Mediterranean Diet

by Coastal Mommies... on Thu, 03/14/2013 - 2:04pm

Once again, the Mediterranean Diet is making news. In the largest randomized trial on this dietary regimen to date, researchers followed more than 7,400 people adhering to either a Mediterranean Diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, one supplemented with nuts, or a standard reduced-fat diet for approximately five years.

On Food: St. Patrick's Day recipes, old and new

If you have not noticed that St. Patrick’s Day is almost upon us, you must be reading this somewhere far, far from Savannah. For more than a week now everything here has been awash with green, the Irish tricolor is fluttering at the door of every other household, and the air is redolent with the unique aroma of simmering corned beef and cabbage.

A look at Saint Patrick

by Traci S on Tue, 03/12/2013 - 4:04pm

With the coming of St. Patrick's Day and all the hoopla that surrounds it in Savannah, I think it's good to take a moment to consider the origins of this most festive holiday. I like to explain to my kids the meanings behind events when I can, and St. Patrick's Day is a great opportunity for some basic investigation.

The power of television to help or hinder our parenting efforts

by Traci S on Fri, 03/08/2013 - 11:25am

For some time now my daughter has been reading her way through the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and thoroughly enjoying them. So, recently I bought Season One of the television series, and all three kids and I have been watching it.
