Almost school time again... remembering to make the most of every season

Soon the school bells will be ringing and the children will be filling their classrooms. Many kids are dreading this return to the school year routine. My son said just the other day that he wishes he didn't have to go to school.

Looking back on my own childhood, I remember the feeling of dread just before the start of a new school year. It's that uncertainty of how things will play out. It's also simply the disruption of the comfortable summer life with hardly a care in the world. Change can be challenging after all.

But from my adult vantage point, I wish I could convince my son to relish this time, this new school year, this childhood. Life is so easy... lots of play time, few responsibilities, his whole life ahead of him. Don't rush it. Enjoy.

And then I wonder what my future, hopefully wiser self would say to me now when I worry over little things, resist change, or fear the worst. Maybe... Don't rush it. Enjoy. Keep the faith. Walk in grace. Relish this time because you only get it once.
