Getting ready for Christmas

Are you ready for Christmas? Now there's a loaded question. And my answer so often seems to be a resounding yes and no.

Yes, as far as the big things go, I'm ready. My heart and mind are focused. Essential gifts have been wrapped. If Christmas were to surprise us all and show up a day early, I'd be fine. We're good.

But no, in another sense I'm never quite ready for Christmas. There is always that lingering feeling that I could do more. There are things, good things, that I have not checked off my to do list. Things like writing the annual Christmas letter. Or mailing out cards. Or making Christmas sugar cookies with my kids with holiday cookie cutters.

Truth is, I could always do more, and sometimes that fact nearly drives me crazy. But I am learning gradually to give myself grace in leaving some good things undone. For the sake of my sanity and my family and peace, in the spirit of the season. It's okay.

Because, as the Grinch puzzled: “It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”

Indeed. And what if Christmas means more than checking everything off my list? And there we find that grace again, shining like the light of the star that led to the Christmas child.
