Where in the world... talking travel with my kids

Last night our dinner time conversation turned to travel. Friends of ours are going on a Disney cruise, and my kids thought it would be wonderful for us to do the same some time. I said that sounded great, but there are just so many places I would love to visit. And that's when the fun began.

My daughter said she would love to visit London, specifically Buckingham Palace (she's a big fan of the royal family). Then she added Paris (that's my girl!) and Greece. My 7-year-old chimed in with Australia and Italy, and my little guy voted for the Sonoran Desert and the Australian Outback.

We carried on like this for several minutes. Everyone was excited, their eyes sparkling with the possibilities as they imagined where in the world we might go. I was so pleased to see the travel bug running rampant in our family.

As a mom, I hope my children will grow up loving where they call “home,” even while they hunger to explore the bigger world out there. I want them to experience for themselves how different people can live so differently from us, and yet we are the same. To stand in awe of the beautiful, the amazing, the tragic. To grow courageous and confident and humble.

I want my children to know the real world, not just our little sphere of it, so they can go out one day and make their own mark on it. And their mark will be beautiful and interesting and inspired. And it will make this big, wonderful, terrible world a little bit better. That is my hope. Travel on.
