Memorial Day Weekend Events: Top 10 List
If you're looking for some family fun events to partake in over Memorial Day weekend in the Savannah area, look no further! Here are the top ten events happening below, in no particular order.
1. Memorial Day Weekend Paddle Trip
May 26-28, Savannah River. Join in celebrating the beginning of the summer with a paddle trip down the beautiful Savannah River. Departing May 26 at 8 a.m. from Burton’s Ferry Landing on Hwy 301 in Sylvania, GA and ending May 28 at Ebenezer Landing in Rincon, GA. The days will be spent exploring primitive oxbows, searching for gators and birds, and learning about the history of the area. Nights will be spent camping along the banks of the river and enjoying storytelling around a campfire. A motorized boat will be trailing the canoers and kayakers so you will not have to carry your gear. You and your boat will be transported back to the starting location upon the end of the trip. 2. Armed Forces Festival on River Street
9 a.m. - 11 p.m. May 25 – 27, River Street. Arts & crafts, patriotic entertainment and fun for the entire family on historic River Street lasts all Memorial Day weekend long. Free and open to the public.
3. Memorial Day Ceremony
11 a.m. May 28, Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 8819 US HWY 301. The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville will host a Memorial Day ceremony May 28. The Glennville VFW/American Legion post will participate in the service, along with members of Ft. Stewart’s 3rd Infantry Division and a bugler from Bugles Across America. 4. Toads and Turtles and Movie Night at Skidaway Island State Park
2 - 10 p.m. May 27, Skidaway Island State Park. Learn the difference between reptiles and amphibians and see and touch live examples. Also enjoy watching a kid-friendly movie under the stars. $5 parking. Call 912-598-2300 for more info.
5. The Savannah Mile Run
8 a.m. May 26, Forsyth Park. This popular run will begin at Forsyth Park and continue one mile straight down Drayton Street, finishing on Broughton Street. This unique running event attracts all levels of participants, from children to experienced runners. The Savannah Mile will include five heats and feature a Fun Run Family Heat and five age groups, guaranteeing many award winners. All proceeds go to The 200 Club, supporting its founding mission to "Care for those who care for us." The cost is $20 through May 24; $25 May 25 and 26. Army Rangers and families are complimentary. 6. War of Jenkins' Ear at Wormsloe Historic Site
1 - 3 p.m. May 26 - 28, Wormsloe Historic Site. Experience colonial Georgia's military operations during the 1739-1748 war between England and Spain. 7. Forsyth Famers' Market
9 a.m. May 26, southern end of Forsyth Park. The Forsyth Farmers' Market is open every Saturday and features farm fresh produce, eggs, pasta, bread and baked goods. Come for weekly information sessions or pick up your in season recipe Offers Double SNAP Dollars for all market purchases. More than 25 local farmers and vendors every week.
8. Memorial Day Weekend at Fort McCallister
10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 26, Fort McAllister State Historic Park, GA Spur 144/Fort McAllister Road. Fort McAllister will host a Memorial Day weekend program Saturday, May 26. The program will focus on the life of the common Confederate and Union soldiers. There will be musket and cannon demonstrations. Special salutes fired in honor of war dead. The cost is $6.50 for adults and $3.75 for children.
9. "Remembering Our Heroes" and picnic and service
10:30 a.m. May 27, Coastal Cathedral, 275 Berwick Blvd. On Sunday, May 27, Coastal Cathedral will be holding a special Memorial Day service in the Sanctuary. It will feature a video, Color Guard from Hunter AAF, wreath presentation, and patriotic music. After the service, the community is invited to an outdoor picnic. 10. Charity Ride for S.T.E.P.S. Summer Camp
10 a.m.-3 p.m. May 26, Johnson High School. All charity ride participants will meet at Johnson High School at 10 a.m. May 26 and ride to Kings Ferry Park. The purpose of the ride is to raise money to support S.T.E.P.S Summer Camp. The camp provides a day camp experience for severely disabled children. Donations will be accepted at both locations.
