Where's the Parents?

In my house we watch a lot of Nick Jr. and Disney, I have noticed one thing that almost all the shows have in common. That one common thing is that there are no parents! So who is raising these kids and helping them navigate their way through the world? Beat me!

In the 70's and 80's there were shows that represented the diversity of family make-ups. In the 90's parents turned into bafoons. Now parents are gone altogether. Now this might not be a big deal, but I think that there is a big deal when the shows our kids enjoy do not represent the values that most of us have.

My kids have found the comedic shows of Full House and Family Matters. It is fun to rewatch these shows that tackel normal family issues. I think that we as television consumers need to take a stance and watch the shows are kids are watching and ask yourselves, "What is my child getting from watching this show?"

TV and other media is a growing source of entertainment and more importantly it influences how we think. Make sure that you talk with your child and discuss situations that test your family values. Most importantly you will always have the right to change the channel and purchase items related to the shows. JUST SAY NO to shows that challenge your families values and beliefs.
