Savannah museums let public in free Feb. 5 for Super Museum Sunday
It’s the day history opens its doors.
Super Museum Sunday unlocks the vault Feb. 5 on more than 40 cultural institutions across Coastal Georgia, giving the public a free glimpse of the treasures hidden inside.
For the Andrew Low House Museum, where “100 visitors is a really good day for us,” says executive director Stephen Bohlin, it’s a chance to expand locals’ awareness of the rich heritage right under their noses.
“As the event is intended, it gives the local public an opportunity to have a taste for all the museums, then come back for the real programs we offer,” he said, noting many Savannahians only make it out to area museums “when they have company.”
On Super Museum Sunday, however, the Andrew Low House usually draws “between 350 and 650 people,” Bohlin said.
Not bad.
In fact, he added, attendance is historically so heavy that “we can only offer first-floor tours” because the wooden staircase to the second floor can’t handle the crowd.
Here’s a list of this year’s participating institutions, who no doubt are hoping for a similarly impressive turnout. Most are open in the noon to 4 p.m. range Sunday. Call for specifics:
