FRIENDS OF ANIMALS ANNUAL AUCTION

On Saturday, August 20th, the Friends of Animals group will host another wonderful gala at the Savannah Station. Our hospital began attending these events several years ago and recommends it highly to anyone who enjoys a nice evening out. The food is wonderful, the venue is beautiful, and the auction lends itself to great gift ideas at a good price. Did I mention that all of this has the added benefit of helping animals in need in our community?
When I moved to Savannah over twenty years ago, there were only two or three organizations that targeted pets as their emphasis. Savannah now has over twenty various organizations that are pet charities. Friends of Animals is an umbrella organization that raises money to be divided amongst several of these pet organizations. This is their 13th auction and their main fundraiser for the year. The recipients from the proceeds in 2011 are divided amongst those who participated in some way with the auction: Bryan Animal Caregivers, Islands Feral Cat Project, PAWS, Save A- Life, Second Chance Dog Rescue, and The Humane Society for Greater Savannah.
Savannah has truly become a city that cares for their pet population. It is a privilege to help promote these organizations for the work that they do. Every day, I see our veterinarians and health care team dedicating themselves to educating clients about their pets’ health. They work long hours and give so much of themselves to improve the lives of their patients. The volunteer groups mentioned above help to ensure more animals have the benefit of receiving the care that our patients have. It is truly wonderful when the two entities work well together and, ultimately, improve the lives of all (or at least more) animals in Savannah. Every pet deserves someone to love and tend to them.
Not everyone who loves animals has the privilege that I do to make a career out of being a “voice” for their well-being. If you have the time (a rare commodity is seems these days), volunteer with one of the above mentioned groups. You will be surrounded by like-minded individuals who want to make an improvement in the life of an animal. This summer, Whale Wars and other animal rescue shows had record numbers of viewers. Those who love animals want to do their part in helping improve their conditions and ensure that they are treated humanely and with dignity. We can’t all go to Alaska to save the whales but there are many opportunities to do your part right here in Savannah. Come out Saturday and meet those who are making a difference!
