Homemade Butter
Today my kids and I made our own
butter. It was great fun! All you need is some heavy whipping cream,
a bit of salt (if you prefer salted butter), and a mixer. We put the
heavy whipping cream in a large bowl, added salt, and beat it on
medium-high.
The kids took turns holding the mixer
(my 2-year-old had some help). They were fascinated to see the stages
the cream goes through. It started out as a white liquid, went
through the whipped cream stage, then thickened and turned yellow
with a cottage cheesy consistency. It's finally done when it
separates into solid butter and the residual liquid buttermilk. After
about 10 minutes, we finished it off by straining the butter to
squeeze out as much of the liquid as possible.
The best part, of course, was eating
our freshly made butter on some warm baguettes with dinner. Yum! If
you decide to make your own butter, be sure to save it in a tightly
sealed container in the fridge as it tends to absorb flavors.
