Do You Have Portion Awareness?

Do You Have Portion Awareness?

Dear Lovely Mommie,

In today’s world of super size and convenient foods it isn’t surprising that we tend to go with the flow and barely blink as we are served a dish or prepare it ourselves.  What has happened over the decades is that our society has become less physical for the most part and instead of acclimating our food portions to match our sedentary slow down, we’ve continued to eat just as much, if not more and the correct portion size is a thing of the past.

On this Sunday morning why don’t you take a step back and think for a moment about our own portion sizes and how much you spoon on to your plates day-in and day-out.  One of the most difficult tasks at hand is acknowledging for your very own eyes just how much you typically over estimate your portion sizes and how you allow yourself to indulge in more than your fare share of food.  Try out these tips to aid in the shrinking of your food platter:

~Use smaller plates and bowls at home and ask for them when dining out.  If your home doesn’t have scaled down versions then go out and purchase them; they are well worth the investment.

~When dining at home take the time to measure and or weigh out your portion sizes so that you become more aware of the suggested serving sizes.  You do not have to practice this art each and every day, just long enough to grasp a sense of appropriate serving sizes.

~Ask for a to-go box when ordering your meal and box up half of your entrée when it arrives at your table; it’s no big deal.  You’ll not only walk away from the table feeling comfortable, but you’ll have a second meal or snack for later.

~Prepackage your snacks in mini-baggies for appropriate serving allotments.  Not only does this practice help you to learn serving sizes, but it also helps you choose healthy portions when you are pressed for time.  Grab and run, then you’re done.

~If the restaurant allows it order the kids’ sizes on the menu; they are always smaller amounts.

Eating too much is at the top of just about everyone’s list as to why they weight more than is suggested.  Being alert to what is an appropriate amount of food/serving takes you being aware of your options and taking the time to analyze, monitor and adjust what you have grown to know as appropriate and re-design your plate with a logical amount of food.
